Wood for campfires
For me campfires are at the heart of a good glamping trip. I love to feed a fire through the evening and keep a nice warm glow and flicker of light not so hot that you may have to move away, not so cold that the flame goes out and it starts to smoke.
Nothing worse sitting around heat-less smoky fire that just won’t get going. I have an off the ground fire bowl and use it both for cooking and we’re sitting around in the evening after.
I like to know it’s going to be ready to use when I need it so to this avail, I take a couple of sacks of kiln dried logs and some fire lighters. Make life easy on yourself, you are guaranteed a good fire hot and glowing fire and even temperature for cooking.
Of course, some of the fun of a good old fashioned campfire is collecting wood. The best wood is dead wood that is lying off the ground. When you walk into a small bit of Woodland, it’s tempting to collect all you can find and carry, but much better to just take what you need little at a time.
There are a couple of good reasons for this. Firstly to leave some for others who will follow. Just as importantly, dead wood is vital habitat for a myriad of bugs and creatures. By taking away the wood you are in effect making them homeless.
Leave what you can take what you need then next time you go looking forward hopefully they’ll be plenty there to find.
Have a nice fire.
